Full Description
A post-medieval pond and ditch were excavated during an evaluation at Kingsnorth in advance of the creation of a rising main between Long Length, Kingsnorth, Ashford, Kent and Waterbrook Avenue, Sevington, Ashford, Kent. The pond and ditch correspond to features on the 1871 OS map.
Environmental sampling of the pond was carried out, this suggests that "the pond was lined with reeds and rushes and was healthy enough to contain large enough fish stocks to feed the predatory pike. Food waste was also recovered from the sample suggesting a degree of human activity close by. The pond was sealed deliberately with a layer of stone and a drainage trench dug towards the south-west suggesting the area was in need of water management even though the pond had been sealed" (from the original report, 1). Edible taxa recovered from the sample incuded hazel, grape, and bramble.
The parallel ditches appear to have formed part of a curvilinear enclosure. The ditches have been recut, suggesting that they were in use over a substantial period. These features contained post-medieval ceramic building material within their fills. (1)
