Full Description
A pit containing Middle Bronze Age - Late Iron Age pottery and flint alongside three undated linear features were excavated at Burgess Road, Aylesham during an evaluation in 2023. The pit measured 2.2m long x 1.07m+ wide x 0.26m deep, and the linear features comprised two small parallel linears measuring 0.80m wide and 0.10-0.14m deep and a large linear feature measuring 1.70m wide and 0.70m deep. The linear features are thought to originate from the later prehistoric period due to the number of prehistoric features identified in the vicinity through cropmark evidence and excavation. However, precise dating of these features has not been possible due to a lack of dateable artefacts.
Finds associated with the pit included five sherds of pottery dating from Middle Bronze Age - Late Iron Age and five sherds of worked flint dating from the Middle Bronze Age - Middle Iron Age. Four of the pottery sherds dated between the Middle Bronze Age - Middle Iron Age, whilst one may have dated as late as 50 AD, however, this artefact may have been residual.
One of the linear features contained an animal tooth and two fragments of oyster shell. (1)
