Monument record TQ 77 SW 1161 - Six sub-circular mounds, possibly post medieval stock refuge mounds, seen within a low-lying field in Shorne Marshes
Summary
Six sub-circular mounds, possibly post medieval stock refuge mounds, seen within a low-lying field in Shorne Marshes. These were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. The mounds appear to lie beneath the narrow cultivation ridges believed to be post medieval land improvement within the marshes. Stock refuge mounds were constructed in the 19th century or earlier on low-lying pasture within the marshlands of the Hoo Peninsula and the margins of the Thames Estuary. These mounds have been referred to and identified in a contemporary paper on the subject.
