Full Description
Six sub-circular mounds, possibly post medieval stock refuge mounds, seen within a low-lying field in Higham Marshes. These were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. The mounds are arranged in an arc centred at TQ 7064 7438 and range in size from 4m to 9m across. They appear to lie beneath the narrow cultivation ridges believed to be post medieval land improvement within the marshes. Stock refuge mounds were constructed in the 19th century or earlier on low-lying pasture within the marshlands of the Hoo Peninsula and the margins of the Thames Estuary. These mounds have been referred to and identified in a contemporary paper on the subject (Spurrell, 1885). (1-2)
