During the archaeological investigation of the land north and south of Cottington Road ahead of the redevelopment of the site, a variety of archaeological features finds and deposits were recorded. Some of the features appeared to represent activity dating to the early and middle Bronze Age. These included a substantial Middle Bronze Age linear feature (perhaps the section of a monumental structure) amongst an intercutting system of linear features, which contained localised deposits of disarticulated human bone. An Early Bronze Age crouched burial interred with two copper alloy stained boar tusks and beaker pottery was also uncovered. This is of interest as comparisons can be made with the grave good found with the Amesbury Archer and ‘the Companion’ burial, excavated close to Stonehenge, as both grave assemblages also contained boar’s tusks. It has been suggested that the boar’s tusks interred with the Amesbury Archer and Companion burial were used by early Bronze Age metal workers for polishing/burnishing tools(information summarised from source – site still awaiting detailed publication, further info to be added) (1)
