Full Description

Cropmarks of an Roman defensive enclosure ditch dated to 1st century BC which has been mapped from aerial photographs: Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 14-AUG-2003 (1), mapped as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024. The ditch extends over 250m NE from the northern end of the wood on Ebbsfleet Hill to the cut of the new East Kent Access Road. No further sections of this presumed complete enclosure are visible as cropmarks, but the ditch has been identified through geophysics and partially excavated along the course of the new road, with further sections identifed to the east and south of Ebbsfleet Hill (TR 36 SW 448). This enclosure overlies the extensive remains of earlier Iron Age settlement (TR 36 SW 356) not visible as cropmarks.
