Monument record TQ 67 SE 1269 - The earthwork remains of a probable post medieval to 20th century stock watering pond (or possible Roman saltern) within Shornemead Marshes

Summary

The earthwork remains of a probable post medieval to 20th century stock watering pond within Shornemead Marshes. The pond appears as an irregular rectangular water-filled depression (12m x 28.5m) with up-cast material forming parallel banks on the long (eastern and western) sides. This is a form of pond seen at several locations in the marshes of the Hoo Peninsula. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. Sites of this type have sometimes been interrpeted as Roman salterns however
