Full Description

A substantial portion of curving medieval wall foundation lying within the area formerly covered by Dover Priory, founded in 1131. From the positioning in relation to the known priory plan it was established that this walling represented part of an apsidal chapel that once projected from the east wall of the North Transept of the demolished priory church.
Virtually nothing of the priory church now remains and the present discovery represents a useful new addition to knowledge about this important monastic site. The unexpected survival of a fragment of medieval walling incorporated into one of the nineteenth century houses that was subsequently built across much of the priory raises the possibility that further medieval fragments might yet await discovery incorporated into other later buildings.’ <1>
