Full Description

Post-medieval agricultural features including a ditch and post-holes were identified during a 2017 excavation at Howe Barracks, Canterbury. (1) The ditch was aligned NNW-SSE and extended across the extent of the excavated area - measuring over 93m. The feature was 1m in maximum width, and 0.28-0.5m in depth. A large number of post-holes were identified; two lines of post-holes were aligned parallel to the ditch, two further lines were aligned perpendicular to the alignment of the ditch. These features measured around 0.4m in diameter and 0.1-0.2m in depth.

A series of three large pits thought to represent quarries were identified to the south-west of the site. These were unexcavated and therefore could not be dated, but may have originated during the post-medieval or early modern period of activity at the site. Only one of the quarries was fully exposed and had a diameter of around 7.75m.

Finds associated with this phase of activity at the site include fragments of clay tobacco pipe, post-medieval pottery and ceramic building material, and animal bone.

Further undated features at the site include pits and post-holes. (1)
