Full Description

An undated boundary/drainage ditch and a droveway were identified at Grasmere Gardens, Chestfield during an evaluation in 2020. The possible droveway measured 2.10m long, 1.40m wide and 0.14m deep, whilst the drainage or boundary ditch measured over 3.30m long, 0.60m wide, 0.20m deep. No artefacts were recovered from the fills of the features, however, residual prehistoric pottery was identified in other trenches at the site. (1)

Medieval linear features and a pit were identified during an evaluation at Grasmere Gardens, Chesterfield in 2023. These are thought to be contemporary with linear features identified during the 2020 evaluation at the site, forming a wider agrarian landscape dating to the medieval period. Six linear features measuring >1.35->2.18m in length, 0.26-1.82m in width, and 0.04-0.44m in depth, and one pit measuring 1.24m in length, 0.69m in width, and 0.1m in depth, were excavated. Some of the linear feature may have functioned as drainage ditches.

During this phase of excavation, 21 sherds dating to the medieval period were excavated across the site. 20 sherds dated between 1175-1375 AD, and 1 sherd dated to 1050-1200 AD. One small find was recovered from the site, comprising a probable mount formed of copper alloy. Ceramic building material was also identified at the site but was undated.

One post-medieval feature in the form of a gully was identified at the site and was thought to date from the 18th century.(2)
