Full Description

A recut NE-SW aligned field boundary ditch was identified during a watching brief carried out near Ford Reservoir in 2004. The first cut of the ditch measured 1.25m in width, and 0.35m in depth. Contained within its fill were burnt flint pot boilers, leading to the interpretation that the feature may have originated in a pre-Roman period.
The ditch was later recut during the Roman period, 1.20m in to the southeast, and measuring 1.20m in width, and 0.36m in depth. This feature had a V-shaped channel measuring 0.30m in width, and 0.09m in depth running along its base. This is thought to have been cut into the ditch to empty it of silt. The second re-cut of the ditch contained fragmented daub, carbon, and over 200 pottery sherds dating from 25 BC to 180 AD (although the majority dated to the 2nd century (120-180 AD)). (1)
