Full Description

A 1:2500 scale air photographic survey was carried out by the Aerial Survey section of RCHME between December 1996 and January 1997. To the north-east of the enclosure described in record TR36SE 17, is a line of four large rectangular pits, centred at TR 3595 6463. These range in length from 7m to 10m and may be Anglo Saxon grubenhauser. (1)

The cropmark remains of a cluster of 5-6 pits of varying shape and size described above have been seen centred as a group at TR 3595 6463 and mapped as part of the Historic England:Ramsgate HAZ project. The smallest measures 5m in diameter, the largest 6m x 10m. One may be the footprint of a Second World War pillbox (NRHE 1618077) seen on wartime aerial photographs. (2)
