Full Description

Two hearths and a series of pits probably dating to the Anglo-Saxon period were identified during a strip, map, and sample excavation at the site. Only one of the features - a hearth - was radiocarbon dated to this period (670-770 cal AD), the other hearth was located 86m to the west and is also thought to have been associated with this phase of occupation at the site. "Both hearths contained large quantities of only mature oak charcoal, and it was noticeable that the pieces were often vitrified, suggesting activity required very high temperatures" (from the original report, 1).
Eight pits were identified which contained evidence of burning but no dateable material, these features may also to date to the Anglo-Saxon period. (1)
