Full Description
Three late prehistoric/Roman ditches were excavated at Oxenden Corner Marshside during groundworks in 2019. The features measured 1.4+m in length, 0.69-6.52m in width, and 0.34-0.48m in depth. One possibly residual fragment of flint tempered Iron Age pottery and a fragment of slag was recovered from the fill of one of the features, potentially dating it to this period.
The alignment of another of the ditches appeared to be parallel with and in close proximity to the Roman road, suggesting that it may have functioned as a roadside ditch. This has led to its interpretation by the authors of the report as potentially Roman in date, however, due to the lack of dating evidence this interpretation is limited.
The other ditch is thought to be late prehistoric or early Romano-British in date, as it lies immediately east of the western extent of a rectilinear enclosure which is cut by the Roman road, suggesting that, if the ditch is associated with the enclosure, it predates the road. (1)
