Full Description
Two medieval pits were identified at Barton Court Grammar School during an excavation in 2016. The pits were sub rectangular or sub circular and measured 2.7-3.7m in length, 1.54-3m in width, and 0.71-0.77m in depth. Artefacts associated with the fills of the pits included medieval peg-tile, animal bone, burnt daub, burnt flint, and metal slag or hearth lining, alongside two sherds of mid-late Anglo-Saxon pottery. The inclusion of medieval peg-tile within the assemblage suggested that the pits were infilled during the medieval period, however, it is unclear if the presence of the Anglo-Saxon pottery sherds indicated that they had been established during an earlier period of occupation, or whether these finds were residual in character.
