Full Description
Roman features and deposits were excavated at 68 Stour Street, Canterbury during an excavation in 2013. Roman layers largely comprised lime mortar associated with construction activity at the site, some of which may have been associated with a builder's workshop at the site. Other layers comprised floors, an occupation deposit, and dump deposits.
Several features were also identified during the excavation including several gullies potentially cut for foundation trenches for temporary structures, one of which predated the construction of the Temple Precinct. Further construction activity was identified in the form of upcast potentially originating from the construction of the temenos of the Temple Precinct.
A series of lamina were interpreted by the authors of the report as representing a working floor associated with a large timber framed workshop at the site. Similar deposits were identified 20m to the south east during previous excavations, suggesting that the workshop could have extended over some distance.
Finds recovered from Roman deposits included pottery fragments, charcoal, ceramic building material, animal remains, and oyster shell. (1)
