Full Description

An Anglo-Saxon pit containing charcoal was identified during excavations carried out in 2007 at Altira Park, near Beltinge. The feature measured 0.64m in length, 0.53m in width, and 07mm in depth. A small quantity of residual pot sherds dating from the mid Bronze Age and Iron Age period were recovered from the fill, alongside seven pot-sherds derived from a 'thumb pot' dating to 450-650 AD. The feature was originally interpreted as a possible cremation burial due to the presence of charcoal in its fill, however, no burnt bone fragments were recovered from the pit, and during this period the predominant burial rite was inhumantion. Therefore, it is likely that the pit was instead associayed with small scale or transient occupation at the site during the Anglo-Saxon period. (1)
