Full Description
Post-medieval walls, a pond, a trackway, and a clay extraction pit were identified during an evaluation carried out at Stones Farm, Sittingbourne in 2018. The work was completed in advance of proposed residential development at the site.
Two walls aligned SW-NE and WSE-ENE and each comprising a single course of post-medieval bricks were identified. The pond measured 16.03m in length with a depth of over 1.34m. The fill of the feature contained domestic refuse including early modern pottery, sheep and pig bone, 30 modern glass bottles, ceramic building material, clinker, and a modern tooth brush. The walls and pond may have been associated with now-demolished post-medieval buildings at Stones Farm.
A large pit was identified measuring 16.5m in length and 1.16m in depth, potentially excavated for brickearth extraction. Finds including vitrified brick and oyster shell were recovered from the fill of the feature. (1)
