Summary

The earthwork of an oval mound circa 15m by 10m is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1953. This is the only one of a possible post medieval livestock refuge mound situated to the north east of Ryestreet. Refuge mounds provided an area of high ground for livestock to occupy in the event of a flood and numerous refuge mounds were built on the marshes of the Hoo Peninsula. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.

The earthwork of an oval mound circa 15m by 10m is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1953. This is the only one of a possible post medieval livestock refuge mound situated to the north east of Ryestreet at TQ 7518 7677. Refuge mounds provided an area of high ground for livestock to occupy in the event of a flood and numerous refuge mounds were built on the marshes of the Hoo Peninsula. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.(1)
