Summary

The earthwork of a circular mound circa 8m across is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1953. This was the only example of a possible post medieval livestock refuge mound situated at the northern edge of Ryestreet Common. It has since been levelled. Refuge mounds provided an area of high ground for livestock to occupy in the event of a flood and numerous refuge mounds were built on the marshes of the Hoo Peninsula. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.

Full Description

The earthwork of a circular mound circa 15m by 10m is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1953. This was the only example of a possible post medieval livestock refuge mound situated at the northern edge of Ryestreet Common at TQ 7504 7735. It has since been levelled. Refuge mounds provided an area of high ground for livestock to occupy in the event of a flood and numerous refuge mounds were built on the marshes of the Hoo Peninsula. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.(1-2)
