Monument record TQ 77 NW 1324 - The Mead Wall, a former sea wall which extends north from Cliffe into the former area of marshland known as Redham Mead

Summary

The Mead Wall, a former sea wall which extends north from Cliffe into the former area of marshland known as Redham Mead, possibly extending to the coast south of Lower Hope Point. The wall is recorded on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map and on all subsequent editions up to the present day. However, it is not clear when the wall was constructed. The wall is now a causeway carrying a track into the marshes. The map sources show a second possible wall branching north off the Mead Wall, extending into the area now occupied by the remains of the Cliffe Explosives Works, carrying the main access road to this site. These were recorded during the course of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
