Monument record TR 14 NW 143 - Site of Evington Place, Elmsted, Shepway

Site of the now demolished Evington Place, a country house located in Elmsted, Shepway. The house is visible on the 1789 OS map of Chilham, the Heritage Tithe Map, and the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th edition OS maps. A historic pond probably associated with the house (TR 14 NW 144) was identified during the 2024 Kent Downs National Landscape Historic Ponds project. This feature was investigated through an auger survey carried out in 2025 which revealed that the deposits contained within it included material potentially originating from the demolition of the house. The pond's backfill date is pre 1945 AD, therefore it is likely that the house underwent demolition on or before this date. (1)
