Summary

The earthwork remains of a line of post medieval oyster pits extending for over 1.2km along the edge of Higham Saltings within the former intertidal zone. They appear as groups of rectilinear and polygonal pits ranging in size from 1m x 3m to 5m x 10m. The south-western group of pits now lie on the landward side of the present sea wall. These were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.

The earthwork remains of a line of post medieval oyster pits centred at TQ 7055 7547, extending for over 1.2km along the edge of Higham Saltings within the former intertidal zone. They appear as groups of rectilinear and polygonal pits ranging in size from 1m x 3m to 5m x 10m. The south-western group of pits now lie on the landward side of the present sea wall. These were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. (1)
