Full Description
The earthwork remains of a small oval mound measuring 98m x 10m, centred at TQ 7266 7764. This is probably an example of a 19th century or earlier stock refuge mound constructed on low-lying pasture within the marshlands of the Hoo Peninsula and the margins of the Thames Estuary. These mounds have been referred to and identified in contemporary writings (Spurrell, 1885).
The location of a former 19th century sheepfold has been noted on 1st, 2nd and 3rd edition Ordnance Survey 1:2500 scale maps to the east of this mound at the entrance between this and two adjacent fields.
The mound was mapped from RAF 1952 aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. (1-2)
