Full Description
The earthwork of a roughly circular mound approximately 7m in diameter is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1953. This is one of six probable post medieval livestock refuge mounds situated within a field on Cliffe Marshes (see NMR 1534539, 1534540, 1534541, 1534542 and 1534547). This mound was near the parish boundary with Cooling at TQ 7523 7743 and had been levelled by 1978. Refuge mounds provided an area of high ground for livestock to occupy in the event of a flood and numerous refuge mounds were built on the marshes of the Hoo Peninsula. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.(1-2)
