Monument record TQ 77 SE 1519 - 19th or 20th century extractive pit, Hoo St Werburgh

Summary

A nineteenth and twentieth century extractive pit served by a system of internal tramways has been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. The northern part of the site was being worked in 1944 and 1947; the rest was covered with vegetation at that time. The northern and western areas were being worked in the early 1950s, but the tramways had been removed by then. Deeper excavations in the northern half could be seen in 1961. The extraction, possibly of clay or sand, covered a total area of about 5 hectares, and may have been associated with a cement works to the east (Monument 1547535).
