Full Description

(TR3451) Roman coins uncovered during a South of England metal detecting ralley held on 11th and 12th September 1993 at Great Mongeham, nr Deal. A few of the coins were particularly noteworthy, perhaps the denarius of Elagabalus being the most attractive. A few late coins dating from the very end of the 4th Century were found and indicate some activity in the last years of the Roman occupation of Britain. The finds showed a fairly standard distribution for Roman coin losses for a British site. However, a rather higher percentage of radiate coins dated 260-273 occurred this year than was the case at Little Mongeham. There was also a trend towards less early and more late coins.
