(TR 3451) Early Medieval coins found during a metal detecting rally held on the 11th and 12th September 1993 at Great Mongeham, nr Deal. The 'Find of the Rally' prize went to a kentish gold thrymsa of the '2-emperors' type. A gold tremissis minted at Quentovic near Boulogne was also found in the same area of the field. Four sceattas were recorded, of three different types, and these may indicate some 8th Century activity as was the case at Little Mongeham. This is further supported by the discovery of a penny of Offa of mercia from the Canterbury mint and fragments of a penny of Coenwulf, his successor. Only one coin from the later Saxon period was found, this being a fragment of a penny of Edward the Confessor. Only one Norman coin was found, this being a penny of Earl Henry of Northumberland from the Corbridge mint. This coin is classified as one of the earlies Scottish issues and is a scarce type although a cut half of another example, from different dies, is known from Ringwould, only a short distance away.
