Full Description

(TR 3451) Medieval coins found during a South of England metal detecting rally held on 11th and 12th September 1993 at Great Mongeham near Deal. A very high number of medieval coins were found and it is not unreasonable to assume that these may be connected with medieval earthworks at Great Mongeham and the possible deserted medieval village at Little Mongeham. Many of the medieval coins came from the field adjoining last year's site. short-cross and long-cross pennies were well represented as were coins of Edward I. From a later date, coins of Elizabeth I were also present in some quantity. The Majority of the 17th Century coins were copper farthings. No notable medieval coins were found, perhaps one of the better pieces being a groat of Edward IV from the Bristol mint.
