Full Description

(TR 3451) Post medieval coins, tokens and jettons found during a metal detecting rally held on 11th and 12th September in Great Mongham near Deal. One sixteenth century coin was found. The majority of 17th century coins were copper farthings. Only three later coins were considered to be worth recording, these being a Dutch coin of 1670, a half-sovereign of Victoria dated 1842 and a Victorian sovereign dated 1900. Coin reference nos: 16th century SEDR-93-371 17th century coins: SEDR-93-69 James I farthings: SEDR-93-156, 304 Charles I sixpence, halfgroat, penny, farthing: SEDR-93-361, 66, 476, 80, 338, 194, 283, 417, 235, 251, Commonwealth halfgroat: SEDR-93-93, 404 Frisia 1670: SEDR-93-67 Victoria halfsovereign 1842: SEDR-93-359 Victoria sovereign 1900: SEDR-93-208 This year's token finds were possibly not as good as those of last year. tokens from Canterbury, Deal, dover, Margate and Ramsgate represented local issues, but several tokens were unidentifiable owing to their generally poor condition. These covered a lengthy time span from the 14th to the 17th Century. Perhaps the most unusual jetton was a possible French issue showing a similar design on both sides. Jetton reference nos: SEDR-93-376, 148, 203, 401, 410, 430, 53, 99, 420, 301, 360, 141, 279, 288, 408, 469, 177, 451, 280, 459, 487, 118, 472, 474 An apothecaries weight (2 scruples) was also found during the ralley ref: SEDR-93-425.
