Summary

Harbour Pier, including lighthouse and gun turret. Construction began in 1847 and there have been many subsequent phases of alteration and development of this pier. In 1854-64 a 1000ft extension was added to the seaward end and again in 1871-75; a 300ft extension and pier-head added. A Gun Turret and Fort were constructed on the pier-head in 1882. This was partly dismantled in 1956, but the guns are still in place. In 1899-1900 there was a 2000ft extension added to the seaward end to form the ‘Admiralty Harbour’ complex. Finally in 1909-1921: Landward reclamation for pier widening as part of the construction process of Marine Station. (location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information).
