Full Description
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Oxford Archaeology at Russell Street car park, Dover, ahead of plans to construct a multi storey car park at the site. Three trenches were excavated revealing a series of deposits dating to between the early Medieval period to modern. Trench one revealed a north-south aligned roughly cut chalk block bank, possibly representing a crude boundary wall. This boundary overlay a series of 12th century make up layers/dumps and was overlain by a thin layer of occupational material dating to the late 12th to the early 13th century, therefore this feature may be dated to the mid to late 12th century. Associated with, and partially overlaying this boundary wall was a thin layer of rammed chalk, possibly representing the surface of a floor or road, this may again be dated to the mid-late 12th century.
