Possible site of shepherd's hut set on raised platform,surrounded by oval drainage ditch/watering pond. Oblong platform approx. 60x20m, orientated E-W on it's long axis. Ditch up to 1m deep (deepest on the N side), but appearing more substancially filled on the S side. Platform is raised to over 1m high in places. No evidence of shepherd's hut, sheepcote or dips on platform, but small (approx. 0.7m wide, 0.8m long and 0.3m high) brick-built open drainage culvert at NW corner of platform, probably acting as channel for C19 pipe drain set in platform. The central platform/ditch does not appear to be connected to radial ditches, but is instead at/nr centre of roughly circular drainage ditch, (up to 260m dia). From the outer perimeter of this ditch, 4 others radiate at the N,S,E and ENE points.(1,2)

Described on 1st, 2nd and 3rd ed OS 6 inch maps as 'Saltbox' (3-5). Possibly a feature of the salt industury. Site identified during 2002 survey and remains can still be traced on modern OS mapping (6). For additional reference to the site in photographs, see (7-13).
