Summary

Roman site of mid 1st century date, associated with salt manufacture, on Bishop Saltings. Timberwork of possible prehistoric date identified by Upchurch Arch Group. Included fragments of round wood hurdle tracks made of primarily hazel. Flint, bone and rare pottery recovered. A track through the marsh is shown on a chart of 1835. No visible remains in 2004 as site lay under accreting saltmarsh.

Full Description

Timberwork of possible prehistoric date identified by Upchurch Arch Group (1). Three main locations. Fragmentary remains of round wood hurdle tracks (samples indicate mainly hazel), and other timber structures adjoining. Flint, bone and rare pottery recovered. (2). Track through marsh shown on chart of 1835 at this location. Site photographs (3-6). No visible remains in 2004 as site lies under accreting saltmarsh. (7)
