Monument record TQ 86 NW 169 - Medieval ditch/creek site, Nor Marsh, Gillingham

Summary

A medieval ditch/creek identified by Upchurch Archaeological Group on Nor Marsh in 1999. The feature was found to contain peat and finds included oyster/mussel shell debris with struck flint flakes, pottery and leather. Dated to the 13th/14th century. The site was visited during a 2004 survey and large fragments of medieval pottery were noted on the foreshore. The only identifiable feature was a roughly circular arrangement of wooden stakes.

Full Description

Medieval site of C13-14 date identified by Upchurch Arch Group on intertidal site. No details available (1). Surveyed 1999 - ditch/creek feature with peat. Opened oyster/mussel shell debris with struck flint flakes, pottery and leather. Nearby to east and south timber post features protruding through mudflat silt (2), site photograph (3).

Seen in 2004: Although no cut features were identified, several large fragments of medieval. pottery were noted to be lying on the foreshore. The only identifiable feature comprises a roughly circular arrangement of wooden stakes, c.0.8m in diameter. (4)
