Full Description

In 1995 an excavation was carried out by Wessex Archaeology along a pipeline between Deal and Ramsgate, at Sandwich Bay. A open ditch runs parallel to the Monk's bank. A small trench was cut through the Monk's Wall bank, but there was no more extensive investigation. A cutting through Monk's Wall revealled a substantial squared timber located lying at approximately a 45 degree angle. The top had rotted but a further small fragment of squared timber, identified as an alder, was lying adjacent to the larger piece and this was retained. (1)
