Monument record TR 03 NW 12 - Iron Age/Romano British site and palaeolithic / Mesolithic/ Neolithic flints

Summary

An Iron Age and Romano-British site was first identified alongside some Mesolithic and Neolithic remains during a watching brief and field walking in 1992. Large quantities of late Iron Age (possibly Belgic) pottery of 75 BC - 125 AD date and Mesolithic/Neolithic worked flints were found. During archaeological investigations in 1993 gullies (land boundaries) and ditches, and finds consisting of late Iron Age/Romano-British pottery dating from 100 BC- 250 AD were discovered as well as flint flakes, iron slag, daub, animal bone and a medieval land drain. Further evidence of the existence of Romano-British buildings was found with the discovery of marble and sandstone building materials.

Full Description

IA/Me/Ne site first identified by watching brief and field walking in 1992 at plot 13 of the Park Farm development centred on TR 0133 3980. A circular feature with 4 1st C Ro sherds and 3 Me/Ne blades in the fill. Around this and to the W were found large quantities if Belgic pottery of 75BC - 125 AD date and Me/Ne worked flints inc some imported material (3) A series of 4 trenches were dug in 1993, centred on TR 0130 3974. Trench A at TR 0131 3977 comprised gullies (land boundaries) and ditches, finds consisting of IA-RB pottery dating from 100 BC- 250 AD, flint flakes, iron slag, daub, animal bone and MD land drain. Trench B (TR 0128 3971) showed evidence of a RB building with the discovery of marble and sandstone building materials (C1-2 AD) Other features consisted of post-holes, ditches, gullies, 1 ditch representing portions of an IA settlement, the gullies probably representing land boundaries, or possibly forming a rampart and ditches with the contemporary post-holes (back-filled EC2). Finds again comprised of flints, pottery and daub. Trench C (TR 0127 3974) also showing portions of the IA settlement and fragments of RB pottery (50-125 AD) and mortaria.
