Summary

A number of Bronze Age mounds, ring ditches and cremations were found during work on the A253 near Monkton. The mounds and ring ditches mainly dated to the middle to late Bronze Age. The four cremation burials found in satellite locations outside the ring ditches of the barrow group were all found in urns of Deverel-Rimbury type. On the basis of this identification the burials could also be dated to the middle Bronze Age. The cropmark traces of four ring ditches within this group have been seen on aerial photographs and mapped as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024.

Full Description

Area 7 of A253 Dualling, centred approx. TR 2950 6566. Contained mounds and ring ditches dating mostly to Mid-LBA. 4 satellite cremations in pots of Deveril-Rimbury type were discovered outside of the ring ditches of the barrow group. (1).

Geophysical survey carried out in 1992(2).

The cropmark traces of four ring ditches within this group have been seen on aerial photographs: NMR 2639/3132 01-AUG-1985 and OS/95018 V 302 10-MAR-1995 and mapped as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024. Each has been recorded separately as individual child records to this parent record. Three are sited in a cluster centred at TR 2939 6564 and a fourth located 30m to the NE at TR 2944 6566. (3-4)
