A Romano-British settlement associated with an east to west running Roman hollow way was found during work to widen the A253 near Monkton. A number of storage pits and industrial looking feaures were revealed as well as hollow way features. Six large post pits in a rectangular shape were recorded and these were thought to be evidence of a granary structure. The site is thought to have been abandoned in the early 3rd century on the basis of the pottery evidence recovered from the pits. The main date of occupation for the site was from AD 175-225 but occupation appears to have resumed in the 4th century when a number of ditches were cut into the late Romano-British field system. (This is thought to be an extension of the site at TR 36 NW 238).
