Full Description

Possible base of sunken trackway located at TR 13390 64798, LBA-EIA transition pottery found, dating to c. 850-650 BC. Likely to relate to pit found to the south-west (TR 16 SW 29).(1)

In 1990 an assessment was undertaken in anticipation of Thanet Way. During field walking it was observed that two areas near to Radfalls corner had a dense amount of burnt flint scatter. The other site was to the south west. The presence of burnt flint but no worked flint scatter suggested a site of occupation, but belong to the later prehistoric (i.e. Late Bronze or Iron Age). No prehistoric pottery survived. It was suggested that this site required further trenching. (2)

In 1991 an archaeological evaluataion was carried out by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at various sites along the route of Thanet Way. This site was not evaluated due to ongoing agricultural processes but some trenches were cariied out by the roadside to try and establish nature, quality and extent of the occupation, if any. (3)

In 1995 an excavation was carried out by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at selected sites along Thanet Way. Subsequent test pitting had revealled a sunken hollow with a deliberate gravel base. The excavation uncovered an early example of a trackway, apparently deliberately surfaced with gravel. There were clear ruts for carts or similar modes of transportation and adjacent to the north was a circular features probably a hut. It is suggested the hut and track were contemporary and dated by cermaics to c.1000-600 BC. The trackway splits in two, towards the western end, one way going north west and the other going south east. (4)
