Full Description
Scatter of possible pits located from AP.(1) Originally created as SMR ref TR 34 NW 146 now deleted and added to TR 34 NW 224.
Possible pit at, gully and ditch located at TR 31325 45810, the latter containing pottery dating to the Mid IA. (600-300 BC) Pits, ditch and pit/ditch base at TR 31352 45840, the latter containing the same dating evidence. Posthole at TR 31375 45870. 8 postholes at TR 31353 45798. Ditch and pit at TR 31365 45820. (2)
Further excavations in 1995 found an "L" shaped boundary ditch, a number of pits, either clusters or isolated, and a single four - post structure. The pits from their location do not seem to be of the same date as the ditch . Some seem to have been used for local quarrying of chalk, flint or loam, others storage. Pottery from the pits dated to c.550-350 BC with some containing red decorated and polychrome decorated sherds. The boundary ditch was shallow in depth and formed an "L" shape. No return was detected, and no trace for any associated bank or palisade remained. Pottery found in the ditch dated to c.550/500 - 350 BC. It was not clear what the ditch would have bounded, but three pits and the four- post structure lay within this feature. No datable material was found in association with the four-post structure, but is of a form known form other iron age sites. Of the four pits, three contained traces of post-pipe with flint packing.
Other small finds form the site included animal bones, daub and struck flint.
There is no evidence that this site is a continuation of the late iron age site in the immediate area (TR 35 NW 222).(3)
