Monument record TR 16 SW 29 - Pit of Late Bronze - Early Iron Age, Brooklands Farm
Summary
In 1994 the base of a large pit was found during works in advance of the construction of the Thanet Way. The pit included a pottery assemblage dating to late Bronze Age - early Iron Age transition period, c.850-650 BC. Subsequent excavation of a 60m x 60m area found an extensive collection of rubbish pits, postholes, a ditch and two hearths. Cow, horse and sheep bone was also recovered from the site which is interpreted as a roundhouse surrounded by rubbish pits. Perhaps the most important evidence was a certain amount of iron slag recovered from late Bronze Age contexts. The site may represent the earliest iron producing site yet known in Kent.
