Monument record TQ 67 SE 70 - Cropmark of a square enclosure, SE of Gravesend

Summary

The incomplete cropmark of a possible Iron Age or Roman enclosure can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 2011. The cropmark of this rectilinear enclosure is situated on the southern edge of part of Gravesend known as Riverview Park. The northern part of this feature is obscured by houses on Vigilant Way. The cropmark defined an area 30m by 38m. The cropmarks of boundary ditches are also visible. Those to the west may be contemporary while others overlie or are overlain by the enclosure. These features were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.

Full Description

A square enclsoure visible as a cropmark in the 2007 Google Earth image, to the SE of Gravesend.

Part of an enclosure, which may be square, with one complete side of length 40m, and two additional sides which extend beyond the field limit. The enclosure is aligned roughly 45 degrees to the cardinal points. Another linear, running roughly N-S, crosses the eastern half of the enclosure. Further cropmarks 30m to the west of the enclosure may represent a trackway and a possible enclosure, though these cropmarks are not clear. (1)
