Monument record TQ 67 SE 85 - Track, field boundaries, cropmark

Summary

A zig-zagging double ditched feature thought to be a trackway, possibly later prehistoric in date, seen as a cropmark following an irregular course across three modern fields. The trackway has a general WNW-ESE alignment, and can be traced for 500m. Midway along its length it changes direction through 90 degrees to the north for 60m before changing back abruptly to the oringinal course, again through 90 degrees. After 55m it again changes direction, this time dipping to the SE through 45 degrees for 80m before angling up to the east for 60m. One side of the track only can faintly be seen extending 60m south into the next field from this point. There is no visible trace on the available aerial photographs of any structure or feature which would have required the track to alter course to avoid it. Aerial photographs taken in 1990 indicate presence of further fragmented ditches at the western end of this trackway, bending to the south-west. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
