Monument record TR 04 SW 131 - Air raid shelter, South School, Ashford

Summary

At South School in Ashford are the remains of a communal underground air raid shelter built during World War II. Built of concrete the shelter is a single corridor trench in zig zag plan, and there are 3 staircased entrances and 1 vertical hatch remaining. Also surviving are toilets, timber benches along the walls and fixtures for hanging and lighting. An historic building survey was carried out in 2005 prior to demolition of the shelter to make way for development. At the time of this survey, the eastern half of the shelter contained stored school items.
