Full Description
Three post-medieval chalk pits were formerly located at Cheeseman's Farm. Only two of these "Old Chalk Pits" are marked on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map of c.1861 - 72. All three are visible on the second edition map of c.1896 - 1898 and are again marked as "Old Chalk Pits". The boundaries of these features are visible on the 3rd and 4th editions (c.1906 - 1940).
Not present on OS 6" 1st ed (1872), but named 'Old Chalk Pit' on 2nd ed (1898). Boundary marked but unnamed on 3rd ed (1908), and still visible on modern maps. (1)
A chalk pit of Post Medieval date was visible as an earthwork in LIDAR Environment Agency DTM 07-DEC-2017. A small spoil heap lay on its north side. This extant earthwork is one of the three nearby features described above. This feature was mapped as part of the Historic England Isle of Thanet project in 2024. (2)
