Full Description
In 1988 the Trust for Thanet Archaeology carried out an evaluation of the Nethercourt estate immediately east of the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Ozengell cemetery. Five trenches were excavated placed so as to intersect cropmark features visible on the site and aligned north-south to maximize the chances of intersecting Jutish burials which are habitually aligned east-west. Only two archaeological features were discovered. Feature 1 was a shallow cut in the chalk surface c.1.3m long by 0.6m wide aligned NNE-SSW. A flint scraper and a clay bead were found within the fill. Feature 2 was a ditch possibly c.3.5m wide and c.1.45m deep. The ditch contained midden material, Romano-British sherds, iron nail fragments and a bronze pin. No finds were dated to later than the Roman period. The excavators concluded that Feature 1 may represent a child burial related to the Jutish cemetery immediately to the west (although no human remains were found) whereas the ditch may relate to the RB site discovered immediately to the east of the site.(1)
A Desk Based Assessment in May 2014 by the Trust for Thanet Archaeology considered the impact on this monument by proposed development at the site. (2)
