Area 'A' is made up of two initial samples within an extensive area od strong magnetic responses identified as being of archaeological interest during the scan. They were later joined by further survey to form a single area. A complex of linear anomalies, forming enclosures and clusters of pits, has been detected in this survey area. The reponses are very strong and show intensive occupation activity. Several areas of particularly dense magnetic anomalies are indicated on the interpretation diagram. One anomaly indicates the position of a ring ditch that has internal pit responses. A second anomaly suggests the presence of a second putative ring-ditch. It is possible that industrial activity may account for the strength of the responses. The anomalies are partially obscured by a series of broad parallel linear trends that are aligned approximately northeast-southwest, for which the precise origin is unclear. The strength of the anomalies can be seen to vary; the stronger anomalies being associated with regions of increased magnetic enhancement that are presumed to relate to dense groups of archaeological features. This suggests that the broad anomalies are formed from material that has been re-deposited from disturbed archaeological features and that they are likely to be more recent in origin, such as ridge and furrow. A magnetically weaker series of parallel linear trends aligned approximately east-west is thought to reflect disturbance to archaeological deposits caused by ploughing. These trends can only be seen clearly where they coincide with magnetically enhanced areas.(1)
