Full Description
During work on an extension for Southgate (TQ 76 NW 157), masonry comprising angular flints, some ragstone and greensand, bonded with a buff coloured mortar containing grit and very small flint fragments was found. Neither wall-face was revealed (at least 1.5m wide s-n) but it appeared to be aligned e-w. The mortar is reminiscent of the medieval period although its alignment in relation to the known defensive wall of the 3rd century and its proximity to the Roman south gate make its identification as part of the Roman wall certain. (1) NB: The location of the wall had to be approximated, as there was no plan in the report, although a later plan by Ward shows it west of Southgate (Heritage 2003/3).
