Monument record TQ 76 SE 59 - White Horse Stone, Pilgrims Way and Bronze Age/Iron Age activity west of Boarley Farm, Boxley

Summary

At present there is no absolute confirmation of Bronze Age activity in the area. A sub-rectangular posthole structure has been tentatively identified as being Bronze Age because of its form and pottery finds in nearby areas. Occasional finds of Bronze Age pottery sherds have been discovered in the upper buried soil in the main dry valley. It may be possible to find a continuity of settlement between the Neolithic and Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age when dating has been completed. A late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age settlement was found on The White Horse site, a chalk spur forming the western side of the dry valley. Patterns of postholes show possible roundhouses and numerous four-post structures. A number of pits, probably used for storage, were also found. The thinness of the soil and ploughing activity have destroyed other evidence. However the pits revealed pottery, animal bones, flint and charred remains which suggest domestic refuse.Three human pit burials were also uncovered. Some of the well-preserved bones suggest ritual activity. The only cremation deposit contained a group of Iron Age deposits which included an iron knife, four iron awls, a whetstone, a small curved iron blade and a group of at least six pottery vessels. One of the vessels was a large urn containing a deposit of grain. To the eastern side of the settlement a metal-working area produced furnace bases and pits containing large quantities of slag. There is no actual evidence of the middle Iron Age, although the items in the cremation suggest this period. The dating of the pottery may confirm it but there is a lack of comparable metalwork of the early Iron Age. Occasional finds of middle Iron Age pottery on the site suggest a diminishing intensity of activity throughout this period. See also TQ 76 SE 58, TQ 76 SE 60 and TQ 76 SE 61
