Monument record TQ 76 SE 61 - White Horse Stone, Pilgrims Way and Medieval activity west of Boarley Farm,Boxley

Summary

In 1998-99 excavations were carried out prior to the Channel Tunnel Railway construction. Medieval features found consist of trackways including the Pilgrims Way itself. There is also a plough-levelled hollow way running north-south across the Pilgrims Way site. A section excavated through the Pilgrims Way failed to show any trackway evidence before the Medieval period. A human burial found beside the track is undergoing radiocarbon dating. This may help the dating process. The bridleway which crosses the White Horse site has been traditionally identified as the line of the Rochester to Hastings Roman Road. Excavations revealed modern material from wheel ruts cut into the chalk at the base of the hollow way. However, the depth of the hollow way suggests it may be medieval in origin. It has been filled within the last 15 years. Apart from the human burial, the only other medieval feature was a corn drier found on the Pilgrims Way site which had sarsen fragments in its construction.
